What is the difference between vertical and horizontal CNC machine tools?
There are two spindle orientations in CNC machining. In a vertical CNC machine, the spindle called the z-axis is oriented vertically. In a C-pillar configuration, the spindle moves in this direction, while the table holding the workpiece moves in the x and y horizontal directions. Vertical machines are great for items milled from one side, such as covers and brackets.
In a horizontal CNC machine, the spindle z-axis is horizontal, usually parallel to the length of the machine. The main axis travels along the vertical y-axis and horizontally along the x-axis. Pallets and fixtures hold the workpiece and move along the z-axis, while the B-axis rotates. Horizontal machining has several advantages, including machining from four sides and better chip evacuation. Generally, heavy workpieces are better suited for horizontal machines, where the machine is stronger, includes a pallet changer, holds more tools, and can be loaded and accessed more easily with the spindle rotating using the B-axis.
